Tebey Golf Classic to Support New Program from Peterborough’s YES Shelter for Youth and Families

Limited VIP Tickets for Acoustic Performance with Tebey, Tim Hicks and Kira Isabella Available for $40

May 10, 2018 – Earlier today, GPHSF, Your Family Health Team Foundation, announced that the upcoming Tebey Golf Classic, hosted by country music star Tebey, would be supporting a new innovative program through a partnership with the YES Shelter for Youth and Families from funds from the Golf Classic. The funding will directly support their diversion work, launching in June 2018, which will see an Outreach Team from YES, in conjunction with Peterborough Youth Services, provide immediate support to youth (ages 16 – 24) in crisis.

The Tebey Golf Classic takes place Wednesday, May 30th at The Quarry Golf Club with special guest country music sensation Tim Hicks. The country music stars will be golfing with fans teeing off at 12 pm followed by a private VIP reception, where Kira Isabella will join the pair for a special acoustic performance. VIP tickets are still available for $40 at www.gphsf.ca and all proceeds will be going to support YES Shelter for Youth and Families.

“We’re so excited to be supporting this new program from YES through our Charity Golf Classic with the Family Health Team Foundation,” said Tebey. “Youth mental health programs are something I am personally very passionate about and to be able to make an impact like this in Peterborough means a lot to me. Over this past year we’ve provided funds to support the Peterborough Family Health Team’s development for a Walk In Clinic for mental health and now to be able to support youth in crisis in our community through this new program from YES is really going to help kids at what may be one of the most stressful or lowest points of their lives. We’re thrilled to see our foursomes are sold out but I’d like to see as many people as possible at the Golf Classic VIP reception and join me, Tim Hicks and Kira Isabella to help us raise as much money as we can for this important work.”

To date, money from the 2017 Golf Classic has been utilized to fund planning and training for a walk in clinic model for mental health, supporting a landscape assessment on best practices in mental health walk in clinic models across the province, as well as training for the 21 Mental Health Clinicians of the Peterborough Family Health Team. Through the support of this new initiative from YES, this service will now be able to launch next month and be accessible to all youth in the region.

“We are so honoured to be partnering with the Tebey Golf Classic as this funding will enable us to ensure that we have a dedicated Outreach Worker available each evening that can be contacted by the client, or the clients family, to support youth in crisis,” said Meagan LaPlante, Executive Director, YES. “Our new program will provide an immediate response to youth, navigation services of the issue at hand and securing a safe environment for the client to stay that night. The Outreach Team will endeavor to support the client to stay in the family home, where possible, or immediately relocate them to another natural support home. The client will then be connected with appropriate mental health supports, who will see them within 24 hours, for a private consultation and crisis supports as needed.”

Last year YES served hundreds of youth in their emergency shelter and programs, between the ages of 16 – 24, the majority of clients requiring ongoing support, particularly around their mental health. Studies have shown the importance of placement in a natural support living arrangement (friend/family home) as superior to uprooting a young person into a homeless shelter. Entrenchment in the emergency shelter system often leads to mental health distress. The emergency shelter that YES provides is a critical life-saving intervention, but through this program YES hopes to see less youth requiring this crisis service, and more youth supported to housing permanency, adding protective factors and better mental health outcomes.

All funds raised through the Tebey Golf Classic will be directed to supporting YES in the delivery of this new program. Although foursomes are sold out, tickets for the VIP Cocktail reception tickets are available for $40 with a tax receipt for 50% of the ticket. All guests will be treated to a private acoustic performance from Tebey, Tim Hicks and Kira Isabella and a chance to meet each of the artists.
